What is ZOMBASE?

A dream, a wish to come true, a double diploma project, a game, a comic, a virtual performance we invite you to take part in!

Mixed Media Storytelling:

The main parts of ZOMBASE adopt the form of a Nintendo DS game. With other games, we observe that large parts of story are often pressed into little text bubbles without action or proper animation. This may not work for everyone and some players -us included- feel slightly annoyed by this form of presentation. Consequently we decided to use multiple media to transport the story of ZOMBASE. This allows us to choose the medium most suited to deliver the current message and to provide the maximum fun for the given task: You will smash the zombies’ heads in the game, read about the story twists in the online comic, and see short animations which will allow a smooth transfer between game and comic, carrying you into the gameplay or lead you out of it. Also we take the opportunity of flourishing  “social-networking” platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, where you will be able to follow and befriend the ZOMBASE main characters. You will get to know them and their lifestyle on a personal basis since you are always welcome to write them and join the base crew.

Sci-Fi Overrun by Zombies Mixed Up With Music:

Welcome to the year of 3012. In the heat of the undergrounds battle an experimental weapon test fails badly *shrill noise*. Not only does it turn against it’s maker, but becomes the doom of mankind *drums beating*. A media-born virus sets all digital output on random,  attacking the human brain with multiple stimuli driving overstressed people into a zombie like state *rapid screams in a loop*. The cerebrum reacts like the digital hardware: First with random repetitions of things spoken or movements, than – whenever interrupted – with the instinct of an berserk hunter *snarls and footsteps added to screams*. A wave of zombies flood the streets of Megalocity *dramatic silence/slow-mo*. As chaos rules, Megalocity’s officials and their defense grids fail one by one. The underground retreats, but only to observe and learn*heartbeats introduce the theme song*. It is the base crew, the remains of the scattered underground of central city, that stands strong and which will fight against them, the others, the zombiefied *all ends in a crescendo*. Will they be calm, staying clear of the virus? Will they be able to fight back, without getting bitten? Will they protect each other?

This and more … Coming up at ZOMBASE, The First Chapter; Downloadable somewhat in 2012.

Who is Happy Happy Creepy Cute (H.H.C.C.)?

Happy Happy Creepy Cute that is Julia Böger aka Aschaschi and Mona Mohr aka Grey-Chi. Both are students at Merz Akademie Stuttgart and are now working on their diploma together. Aschaschi and Grey-Chi fell for video games a long time ago, they are fascinated by the creation of interactive, fictional worlds and therefor decided to develop the game (concept) ZOMBASE as part of their diploma, which is supervised by professor Olia Lialina.

Aschaschi was born in 1988 in a small town near Stuttgart and started her New Media studies in 2008. Throughout the last years she published one short-comic and two novels and worked for a local newspaper, some small graphic design studios and a social gaming company called Mega Zebra. She is a big fan of cutting edge comics and loves western, horror and (dark) fantasy stories of all kind. She spends all her time on drawing, writing, handcrafting, playing video or board games, is a multiple cat and hedgehog owner and always keeps an eye on the craziest corners of the world searching for inspiration, collecting everything creepy, cute and kitschy. She hopes that you will love the ZOMBASE project as much as she does and that a lot of fun will come out of it!

With ZOMBASE Aschaschi is responsible for the concept arts, character design, graphical user interface (GUI) design, main parts of the in-game graphics and animation, level design and balancing, the comic drawings and all the web-stuff. She will gladly answer your questions and adores to get your opinion about the graphical aspects of ZOMBASE or the Developers Blog itself.

Grey-chi was born in 1987 in a town near Frankfurt am Main and started her Film and Video studies in 2008.  Throughout the last years she has worked together with the theater in Stuttgart, doing Illustrations and an Animation supporting the plays.  She worked at Uwe Kassei Filmproduction working on projects for the Caritas and other companies. Currently she operates one camera at the live performance “Uwe Schenk trifft”. She is a fan of crazy comic and anime stories (see the rubric “media we like” for more detailed amatory avowals). She likes exploding colorful stuff. She is a fan of the German expressionist movies, likes the nouvelle vague and film noir, as well as B-movies and the new, new Hollywood era.  She spends her time doing the obvious: watching, reading and thinking about movies, TV-series and video games. She dislikes to write about herself in the third person, but does it anyway since it is considered professional and such.

At ZOMBASE Grey-Chi is responsible for the developing the story and characters, writing the dialogues, crafting the storyboard, helping out with the coloring of the in-game-graphics, paneling and inking of the comic, that will be drawn by Aschaschi. She hopes all this web-stuff will kick off some cool discussions that will be fun and challenging.
